The grade four English language arts program develops fiction and non-fiction reading skills and continues to expand students' writing skills. In a five day week, students work on reading comprehension for three days and writing skills for the other two. For the reading component, one of the five days focuses on a novel study, another is for independent reading and the last is for non-fiction reading skills. In the fourth grade students learn about how textbooks are organized and practice their reading skills through high interest single page factual articles.
Writing instruction encompasses a variety of activities. These include: handwriting, spelling, punctuation and capitalization, dictionary and grammar skills, paragraphs, poetry, a research report and story writing. In addition, students at the fourth grade level explore six story patterns through story mapping, develop author language skills through paragraph writing, and learn letter-writing formats through a fun project.
The program includes a detailed teacher's manual with answer keys.
