Book Summary:
Report writing can be a great learning experience. This e-book contains two research reports. A series of questions are used to guide students’ research skills. This is a wonderful way to help them select content and focus on how to connect facts together without plagiarizing. Secondly, children can modify any question to suit their research discoveries.
Short reports are better than long ones. They allow a child to learn critical skills within a developmentally appropriate amount of time. Recording source references on a Reference Source Sheet (pages 11, 22) alongside collecting facts, minimizes the challenge of creating a bibliography at the end. Utilizing the simple skill of beginning sentences with plural nouns and ‘ing’ verbs (participles) along with a focus on strong verbs creates wonderful writing. Use the Sentence Starter Reference Sheet (pages 13, 24) for help during the writing process. A student frog report exemplar, included in the book. utilizes this guided research approach demonstrating its effectiveness (click on sample pages to view report below).
Researching and writing with structured teaching empowers students to understand how to independently create their own outlines, conduct their own research and write their own report. An example of a student working independently to create his own outline and write the report is shown in the last section of this e-book.
